"I am a teacher at Benjamin Banneker High School in College Park, Georgia. This past January, our principal gave us - as a gift- a copy of your book, "Rigor is Not a Four-Letter Word". Many of our staff just thought of the book as just another mind-numbing task in the midst of all the other "duties and responsibilities" we are bogged down with. There has been so much talk about how we (teachers) are not challenging our students at the level of cognition mandated by our state standards. Honestly, I was a little frustrated because I wasn't quite sure if my courses and instruction would be considered "Rigorous". I really wanted to know more about "RIGOR"- what it was, what it looked like in practice, etc. So, I started reading your book one Saturday evening. To my surprise, I was hooked on page #1, "...students reflect our perspective of them." To make a long story short, I gathered some teachers together and we have started a "Teacher Book Talk". We read one chapter per week and discuss our personal thoughts and issues that we have in our practice and classrooms at our weekly "dine and talk" sessions. Our school is on its way to the top as we had never met AYP status until 2009. Your book has inspired the members of our group to be better teachers. Your book has made "RIGOR in the classroom" real and attainable to teachers who are struggling to manage, engage, and motivate students. The resources cited in the book are AWESOME. This book has inspired us to dig deeper and more strategically to meet the vast and diverse needs of our students. Thank you so very much for sharing your knowledge and expertise."
